Prevent freezing of pipes with electric heating cables

Author:

Are you ready for the winter freeze? The old adage applies to winter preparation in the plant and on site. Throughout the winter months, when temperatures drop below zero, water pipes will freeze if neglected. Simply installing insulation (often referred to as lagging) will not prevent the pipes from freezing - freeze protection of the pipes can be ensured by installing electrical trace heating cables.

By preparing and installing heat tracing cables, the danger and worry of burst pipes can be avoided.

Don't wait until the next longest frost or next burst pipe. Now that winter temperatures often drop below -10ºC, the commercial cost of burst pipes in retail can be high - burst pipes, closed shops, empty warehouses.

Prevent burst pipes this winter with electric trace heating cables, prevent burst pipes in winter, don't take any chances this winter, talk to us about anti-freezing of water pipes. Take preventative measures by installing anti-freeze devices tracer heaters to ensure that pipes are prevented from bursting this winter.

Anti-freeze or anti-frost tracer cables are fitted to the pipes, which are then insulated. The tracer cable replaces the heat lost from the pipes with insulation, thus ensuring that the heat is retained.

For designers and specifiers of new buildings, including offices, schools, hospitals and industrial facilities, frost protection for trace heating is an essential requirement.

On-site maintenance contractors and temporary offices used in a wide range of locations should also consider protection against burst pipes to be essential - supplying fresh water to nacelles in remote sites without mains water requires trace heating to ensure an adequate water supply throughout the winter months.

The dangers posed by burst pipes can be catastrophic and cause serious damage to infrastructure and injury to life. The following video demonstrates what can happen when a water main bursts.

What is an anti-freeze heat trace?

Anti-freeze heat tracing takes the form of an electric heating element fixed along the length of the pipe. After fixing the cable to the pipe, it must be insulated with thermal insulation to prevent the pipe from losing heat. The heat generated by the heating element then maintains the temperature of the pipe, thus providing frost protection.

The cable uses two parallel busbars which are connected by a semi-conductive polymer containing carbon. It is this polymer that generates heat by allowing an electric current to flow between the two busbars. Once the cable is made, it is exposed to irradiation.

The output of the cable can be varied by changing the carbon content and dosage to produce different output characteristics. By using higher output cables, different cable outputs can provide frost protection not only on small diameter pipes but also on larger pipes.

In addition to being used for frost protection, tracer cables have many other applications, some of which are listed below.

  1, Temperature maintenance/slope heating - snow/ice protection, 2, Snow/ice protection for gutters and roofs, 3, Underfloor heating/4, Ice protection for door/jamb joints/5, Window demisting/6, Anti-condensation/7, Anti-freezing of ponds/8, Soil warming/9, Anti-cavitation purposes
